"And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!”

And each day, it’s up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what’s important.”

The Kind of Mom I Am

December 7, 2015

I like the kind of mom I am on vacation.......

when time slows down and the days are full of play.  Lots of "yes, we can do that" and "eat what you want, I trust you".  Answering all the questions, holding hands, walking slow.

I like the kind of mom I am on the field trip.....

when the car is full of friends, giggles and secrets.  Lots of "are you guys excited?" and "what did you enjoy the most?".  Listening, smiling, reverence for the gift of seeing her in her world.

I like the kind of mom I am when something goes wrong.....

when it feels like the world is ending, and sadness and fear have moved in.  Lots of "it's okay to be sad" and "take all the time you need".  Big feelings, big hugs, big hearts.

I like the kind of mom I am when they are learning something new.....

when the moments flip between excitement and pure frustration.  Lots of "I know it feels tough" and "mistakes are how we learn".  Patient, kind, understanding from a life of experience.

I like the kind of mom I am when it's time to celebrate.....

the big goal, the first time down the slide, the day she pooped on the potty.  Lots of "you worked so hard for that!" and "I'm so proud of you".  Unbridled enthusiastic high-fives, and smiles that fill my face.

I like the kind of mom I am when I blow it....

when my tank is low, my lid flips, and damage is done.  Lots of "I'm sorry", "What can I learn from this?", and "What would love do?".  Accountable, forgiving, forever focused on the relationship.

I like the kind of mom I am.
